Here is a quick and easy way to get the year of manufacturing of Leica lenses (L, R, and screw mount) based on the serial number which is located on the front of the lens:
It is possible as the USB Dock recognizes the serial number of products. Even though you have 2 pieces of 1 lens, the software will not mix up the lens information and each customization. Does the software offer off-line operation? Firmware updating and the lenses connected to the USB Dock for the first time require internet access. The simplest way to find the serial number is to inspect your camera and lenses. It’s almost certainly printed, stamped, or engraved on them. On your camera, you’ll most likely find a small sticker on the bottom near the tripod mount. This displays manufacturing information, as well as the serial number. Hey FenderBender, Welcome to the forum. Dating Sigma guitars is not an exact science. AFAIK the serial numbers do not correspond to dates. Others on the forum are way smarter than I, but I think the best that can be done is to narrow it down to a decade or two based on the country of origin and couple of other physical traits of the guitar. Update: A reader just sent me another way of determining the production year of Leica cameras and lenses: just got to this website, and type the serial number.

Sigma is known as a producer of SLR lenses. Its lenses are available for the different lens mount systems of several SLR camera makers.
Sigma was founded in 1961 by Michihiro Yamaki in Tokyo (Japan). Nowadays Sigma produces SLR camera models. The plant is 300 km north of Tokyo because it needs clean air and clean water for making optical precision products. It produces optical devices with glass free of arsenic and lead.
In late 2008 Sigma purchased sensor designer Foveon.

Sigma digital cameras are unique due to their using Foveon sensors, instead of the common Bayer filter array. Because such images do not require the interpolation of color data through a demosaicing process, somewhat higher absolute resolution is possible, as well as freedom from rainbow color moiré patterns.
